Today I was reminded once again that project management is soul-sucking.
Since I can’t possibly conjure up words that are better than Oliver Burkeman’s, I’ll let him do the talking (err… writing).
"Deep down inside," as Nick Milo put it in a recent email, "project management is soul-sucking." We take an area of work we find enjoyable and interesting – if we're lucky to have absorbing work in the first place – then draw a conceptual box around it labeled "project", break it down into actions, slot it into a system of goals… and all of a sudden, it's no fun at all.
